The return of Ti West to horror was bound to be big. His lastest 70s era "psycho-biddy" hagsploitation slasher, X made a bloody splash at the box office earning over $4.4 million opening weekend. The film had its world premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas on March 13, 2022. With homages to beloved slashers and a particular nod to Tobe Hooper's iconic horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), the film doesn't disappoint in both titilating and disturbing audiences.
In an A24 newsletter, Ti West (House of the Devil, The Innkeepers) discussed making his first horror film in 10-years stating, "During my time off I revisited a lot of films that I love – particularly those from the 1970s. There was such a reverence for the art of cinema during that decade. Mainstream films respected and challenged their audience's appreciation for filmmaking, and independently-produced exploitation films catered unapologetically to titillating the subversive taste of the masses. My goal with X was to hopefully somehow capture the best of both worlds. To make you think about the craft of filmmaking while still having a fun night out at the movies."
Set in 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast find themselves fighting for their lives. The film stars Mia Goth (A Cure for Wellness, Suspiria), Jenna Ortega (Scream, The Babysitter: Killer Queen), Brittany Snow (Would You Rather, Prom Night), Scott Mescudi, (Don't Look Up, Creepshow) also known as Kid Cudi, Martin Henderson (The Ring, The Strangers: Prey at Night), and Owen Campbell (Super Dark Times).
In the newsletter, West went on to say, "X is a violent slasher movie set in the late 1970s about an eclectic group of young people making a pornographic film. Historically, horror and pornography have always had a bit of a symbiotic relationship – two forms of lowbrow entertainment that could be made independently outside of the traditional Hollywood studio system. What is often overlooked, however, is the wildly ambitious entrepreneurial spirit that accompanies trying to make these types of films, and craft them well. As a fellow movie lover, this is my tribute to that spirit. I hope you enjoy the ride."
A prequel to the film was shot secretly and is currently in post-production. Pearl will tells the story of Pearl in her youth as her need for love, her desire and envy of youth drives her to sinister cravings. A trailer was shown as a post-credits scene in theaters. The prequel is set to release in 2023.
