What doesn’t kill you makes you wish it did. In an AMC Networks official press release on April 13, announcing Shudder’s acquisition of Canadian director Rob Jabbaz’s feature debut THE SADNESS, Craig Engler describes the film as “...a brutal, boundary pushing shocker, one of the boldest and bloodiest we’ve ever acquired. We anticipate it having a legendary and well-deserved following among Shudder members.” Debuting the 2021 Locarno Film Festival, the film has been a massive hit amongst horror fans since arriving on the festival scene earning the New Flesh Award for Best First Feature at the 2021 Fantasia Film Festival. Last August, it also claimed Best Picture at Fantastic Fest, earning Jabbaz an award for Best Director.

THE SADNESS will undoubtedly draw a dark and bloody line for casual and hardcore horror fans. Inspired by the comic book Crossed (2008), created by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows, the film depicts a city engulfed in a gruesome and violent pandemic, prompting those infected to give in to their most violent, sadistic musings. There is no shortage of gore and depravity as the film borrows heavily from its source material. It’s reminiscent of Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002) and its rage virus infected populace. However, the film features extreme gore and is far more depraved than Boyle’s film. If you plan to watch the movie, let’s hope you don’t have a weak stomach.

This film doesn’t hold back anything. Every gruesome death and disturbingly violent act is on full display. Some may find its graphic scenes to be too jarring. It harkens back to the early 90s Hong Kong Category III exploitation days. Those films were banned for anyone under 18 to rent, purchase, or watch at the cinema. Countries like Australia that have a strict code for violence in media may seek to pull this movie from circulation soon after its release.

The official trailer released in anticipation of the film’s release on Shudder provides a vibrant, disturbing, bloodthirsty peek into the city of Taipei engulfed in a fierce apocalypse. The film stars Regina Lei, Ralf Chiu, Wei-Hua Lan, and Yin-Ru Chen in her feature film debut. THE SADNESS debuts exclusively on Shudderin North America, The United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia on May 12, 2022.
