Dead By Daylight Opened the Box and Hellraiser Came

Clive Barker's 1987 horror film Hellraiser along with Pinhead is coming to Behaviour Interactive's wildly popular asymmetrical horror game Dead By Daylight just in time for Halloween!

On August 13th, 2021 Behaviour Interactive, the Montreal based game developer of the asymmetrical horror game Dead By Daylight dropped a teaser trailer for Chapter XXI. Fans of the Hellraiser franchise rejoiced! At least those that picked up on the not so subtle references to Clive Barker's Hellraiser (1987). With VHS static playing on a vintage 1980's television depicting the number 19.87 and a red flower blooming upward, a direct reference to the film, it wasn't hard to surmise that Pinhead would be the newest Killer to join the game. The studio teased the released with prior to the trailer in Discord and on Twitter sneaking the letters R-A-I-S-E in a series of tweets last week and the letters H-E-L-L into an audio file posted on Discord.

Sadly for fans of the sci-fi horror Netflix series Stranger Things, with the launch of this licensed character means the death of another licensed franchise on the platform. Stranger Things content will no longer be available for purchase after November 17, 2021 and the Hawkins National Laboratory Underground Complex map will no longer be playable. This news comes not long after a new Jonathan Byers cosmetic was released for the character of Steve Harrington during the last chapter. Players who already purchased the DLC and cosmetics will still be able to play them. Before it goes away forever, players can purchase the Stranger Things DLC and cosmetics for 50% off in the in-game store. We're curious to find out why the addition of one license means the death of another assuming the swift exit of the Stranger Things DLC is related to the addition of Pinhead.

Pinhead, The Cenobite launched on the Player Test Build (PTB) on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 Let's break down the new killer's perks and "no tears please, it's a waste of good suffering."

  • You induce a mental suffering by crushing any hope of escape.

  • After a generator is repaired, The Entity blocks the generator with the most progress for 20 seconds. You see its white aura during this time.

Hex: Plaything

  • A hex that toys with a victim’s suffering.

  • The first time you hook a Survivor, they become Cursed and Hex: Plaything activates on a Dull Totem. The Cursed Survivor suffers from the Oblivious status effect until Hex: Plaything is cleansed.

  • Hex: Plaything’s totem aura is revealed to the Cursed Survivor when within 24 meters of it. For the first 90 seconds, only the Cursed Survivor can cleanse the totem.

Scourge Hook: Gift of Pain

  • You are the bringer of sweet pain.

  • At the start of the trail, up to 4 random hooks are changed into scourge hooks. You see their auras in white.

  • When a Survivor is unhooked from a scourge hook, they suffer from the Hemorrhage and Mangled status effect until fully healed. The first time the Survivor is healed, they suffer a 7% penalty to healing and repairing actions until injured again.

New Dead By Daylight chapters typically release every three months so once the PTB concludes, we don't expect it to be too long before The Cenobite officially makes his way into the game. We recently recorded a new podcast episode to celebrate the anniversary of Hellraiser (1987) with Gun Media Community Development Manager, podcaster and fellow horror fan Matt Shotcha. Stayed tuned for the episode coming Friday, September 17, 2021.

The new Killer, Pinhead (a.k.a. The Cenobite) is now available to play on the Dead By Daylight PTB for all playing on PC.
